About Heat Pipe Technology

HEAT PIPE TECHNOLOGY, INC. (HPT) is the innovation leader in energy recovery and dehumidification systems for commercial applications around the globe. Employing the very latest in passive heat transfer technology, HPT designs and supplies the core systems to the world's leading commercial air handling equipment manufacturers.

HPT was founded in 1983 with a grant from the Department of Energy for a project to begin research on new uses for heat pipe technology. Heat pipes are passive-heat-transfer devices that were previously used in various applications ranging from orbiting satellites to the Alaskan Pipeline ground spikes. By applying the principle of heat pipes to air conditioning systems, efficiency was greatly enhanced in both dehumidification performance and energy utilization, with moisture removal increased by 30 to 50%.

Additional research and development followed to determine how to lower fabrication costs. This task was performed by HPT under a three-year, $500,000 contract with NASA's Kennedy Space Center. The outcome of that effort was a new generation of heat pipe technology, costing one third the price of the existing aerospace heat pipes, while still offering the same level of performance.

This revolution shattered the price barrier that restricted the widespread commercial implementation of heat pipes, and it yielded a rapid return on investment for building owners, often in as little as a year. Projects soon proved the technology could be applied on virtually any scale, while being commercially viable and practical to implement.

With a staff of innovative mechanical engineers and a specialized team of installation experts, HPT began installing patented Dehumidifier Heat Pipes in thousands of locations in the US and around the world. HPT's client list has grown to include many high-profile applications for such organizations as Walt Disney World, Kennedy Space Center, GE, Marriott and Hilton hotels, the US military, and many of the US's top universities, as well as for hundreds of hospitals and schools.

In November of 2009, HPT was acquired by MiTek®, a Berkshire Hathaway Company. With an infusion of capital, the company invested heavily in personnel, machinery, and software. All of these are components which lay the groundwork for growth for years to come.

Heat Pipe Technology, Inc. is recognized worldwide for our innovation and expertise. Our heat pipes are made right here in Tampa, Florida; they save energy and dramatically reduce heating and cooling costs.

With a network of more than 70 representatives and licensees in North and South America, Europe, The Middle East, Asia, and Australia, HPT is a true global operator.
